When I arrived in Germany, my first few years here were - to put it nicely - bumpy. It was a combination of learning a new language, acclimating myself to a new culture, and simply being a long way from home.

As I now know, I was in the midst of culture shock. I became irritable and seriously considered leaving Germany earlier than my planned assignment. That would have been a real shame, since I loved my job as a journalist. But I was sometimes so frustrated by the everyday reality of life overseas - shopping hours, red tape, Telekom, etc.

And then one day, things started to click. I began to find the humor in everyday situations. My German improved. And I discovered a few of the many international networks available to expats. The morale of the story: I've now been here for 18 years and thoroughly enjoy living in Germany. When I relate this story to some of my international friends, they often nod their heads and smile knowingly. I know then that they too also had an similar experience.
