Why We Started Newcomers Network
When I arrived in Germany, my first few years here were - to put it nicely - bumpy. It was a combination of learning a new language, acclimating myself to a new culture, and simply being a long way from home.
As I now know, I was in the midst of culture shock. I became irritable and seriously considered leaving Germany earlier than my planned assignment. That would have been a real shame, since I loved my job as a journalist. But I was sometimes so frustrated by the everyday reality of life overseas - shopping hours, red tape, Telekom, etc.
And then one day, things started to click. I began to find the humor in everyday situations. My German improved. And I discovered a few of the many international networks available to expats. The morale of the story: I've now been here for 18 years and thoroughly enjoy living in Germany. When I relate this story to some of my international friends, they often nod their heads and smile knowingly. I know then that they too also had an similar experience. If you have one as well, you might want to contribute it here.
We launched the Newcomers Network to help expatriates become acclimated quickly and easily to their new surroundings. We offer information about restaurants, clubs, cinema, jobs, housing, schools and more. In addition, the discussion forums enable expatriates to make contact, to exchange experiences and organize events.
If you are new to the Newcomers Network, then be sure to introduce yourself in our forums.
We are a small but growing community. We hope that you will join us.

Hi!
My name is Rebekah and live in Moosburg between Landshut and Freising outside of Munich. We just moved her 3 months ago from the US but I speak German as I spent 7 1/2 yrs here as a child in Freiburg. (Bavaria is VERY different!! LOL!)
I was wondering if you might be aware of a group similar to this in my area?
I am interested in opening a small shop and don't know where to get started and saw that you guys have had meetings on it and would really like to find something like this in our area or maybe you could direct me somewhere I could find the information I could find helpful? I am a US citizen so I know it is a bit different for a non EU citizen than a EU citizen but that is about as far as I know. :)
Any help you can offer or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!
Blessings,
Rebekah
