Regional BusesRegional Buses

Starting in 2013, the market for regional buses in Germany was liberalized. Under pressure from the EU, the German government finally overturned a 1934 law which protected German railways from regional bus competition. Private companies are now permitted to offer regional bus services - but only for trips longer than 50 kilometers. Bus prices tend to be significantly lower than the same trip by train, but the travel time is longer and the services usually only run between medium to large cities. Most of the buses offer free WiFi and bookings are done exclusively on the internet. In Frankfurt, the regional buses stop on the south side (Südseite) of the main train station, which tends to be overcrowded and somewhat chaotic. Most buses also stop at the Frankfurt Airport. Three of the larger bus operators in this new segment are:

Carpooling - MitfahrzentralePassengers are provided with contact details and descriptions of the journey

A dynamic market for carpooling has developed in Germany, thanks to the country's keen environmental awareness and the high prices for regional trains. The service is quite popular with students, but also with drivers who regularly travel from Point A to Point B and want to defray their fuel bill. Payment is made directly over the website and there are even "women only" trips. The two main websites which offer this form of community-based carpooling are: www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de and www.mitfahrzentrale.de
