Two companies from the optical industry are located under one roof at a plant in Wetzlar: Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH and Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH, both subsidiaries of the Carl Zeiss Group. In 1849 Moritz Hensoldt and Carl Kellner laid the foundations for the optical industry in Wetzlar. Today both companies manufacture optical systems for different companies.

Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH forms the ZEISS Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Division and covers various key processes in the manufacture of microchips with its wideranging product portfolio. As a developer and manufacturer of semiconductor production equipment, the company is a market and technology leader. For example, a large proportion of all microchips worldwide are manufactured using Zeiss technologies.
