Founded in 1906, the Gießen City Theater resides in an elegant art nouveau building. Theater critics have widely approved of the three-level approach, which includes a broad repertoire of opera, operettas and classical concerts, as well as contemporary drama and dance. In addition to the 600-seat main theater (Großes Haus), the Theater also has a studio stage taT with its own repertoire.

The Keller Theater
Originally launched by the US Army in 1958, the Keller Theater in Gießen is the oldest English-language theater in Germany. During the postwar period, a large US military community was based in Gießen, and the Keller Theater was part of the entertainment program for the troops. Since the drawdown, the theater has focused on mainstream drama, comedy and musical performances at different venues in Gießen.
