Berchtesgaden, Germany (dpa) - The International Luge Federation (FIL) has launched a campaign to provide financial help for the family of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who was killed at the Vancouver winter Olympics.
The federation, based in Berchtesgaden, Germany, said Wednesday it had transferred 10,000 euros (13,600 dollars) as immediate support to the family of the Georgian athlete who died in a training accident on the opening day of the Games.
The family of Kumaritashvili is in urgent need of financial support, the Georgian luge federation president has told FIL.
Some years ago, their house was destroyed by fire. Mainly with the help of their only son, they had begun to rebuild the property but it is still far from completion, FIL said. dpa bw
