Jailed Islamists accept sentence after failed bomb plot in Germany
Dusseldorf (dpa) - The last of four Islamists, jailed in Germany last week for conspiring to blow up US army bases, announced Thursday that he would not appeal, bringing the 10-month trial to a final close.
"No further legal means will be applied," said the lawyer of Fritz Gelowicz, a German convert to Islam sentenced to 12 years′ prison. The appeal period expired Thursday, a week after the verdict was announced.
The four men, of whom two had Turkish origins, received sentences ranging from 5-12 years after admitting their association with the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU), an affiliate of al-Qaeda.
The group had stockpiled materials to build bombs aimed at targets as diverse as US bases, bars, supermarkets and airports in various German cities.
However, they came under police observation long before they could carry out the attacks, which would have been on a scale unprecedented in Germany. dpa hm ms
