BASF - we create chemistry, founded in1865, is the world's leading chemical company with about 113,000 employees, six Verbund sites and approximately 380 additional production sites worldwide. Nowhere is the world of BASF more clearly identifiable than at its headquarters in Ludwigshafen. The company's first site has been in operation since 1865, and today is our most important production plant. Spreading over an incredible 10 square kilometers, it the BASF Group's biggest site, and is the largest chemical plant worldwide. Over 34,000 people are employed there. Other big sites in the region include our Agro Center in Limburgerhof and our site in Lampertheim, South-Hesse, about 20 kilometers to the North of Ludwigshafen.
The core business of BASF is chemistry- and many products that make life safer, easier, and more pleasant every day exist only because chemistry makes it possible. From paints to automotive coatings, from insulating materials and catalysts to vitamins or UV filters, we develop products and solutions for countless industrial sectors. Throughout all our business activities, we combine economic success, social responsibility and environmental protection.
For us, a future-oriented company policy means to take on responsibility for society: Only in an attractive environment can we remain successful in the long run. The BASF site in Ludwigshafen is situated like a city within a city, in the heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region: it is very close to the surrounding residential areas, and this is why good connections to our environment are especially important to us. Together with the whole region, we are involved in a lot of different projects in the fields of education, innovation and science, culture, sports and quality of life. Each year, more than a hundred thousand people visit BASF events, such as the annual wine cellar festival, the farmers' market or our free site tours. With numerous interesting offers for our neighbors - from kindergarten up to university - we also aim to create an exemplaryeducational landscape in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
