Heidelberg International School (HIS) is an independent, coeducational day school for students of all nations and cultures. An international curriculum is offered for students from Early Primary 1 (age 4) to Grade 12, and the language of instruction is English.
Founded in Karlsruhe in 2000, the school moved to Heidelberg in 2002 and was renamed Heidelberg International School. In January 2009, HIS became a member school of Phorms Education. HIS is an International Baccalaureate World School, and is one of the fewer than 250 schools worldwide that offers the three IB programs - Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Program.
The school is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the Council of International Schools (CIS) and works closely with the Association of German International Schools. HIS is recognized as an "Ergänzungsschule" within the state of Baden-Württemberg and has begun the process of accreditation through the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). HIS has cooperation agreements with major international companies as well as academic and research institutions within the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region.
The student-teacher ratio is low helping to ensure differentiation throughout the curriculum. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for the IB Diploma, which is highly regarded by universities around the world. German (from beginner to advanced level) is a required subject in all grades, and Spanish is taught as an additional language beginning with Grade 6. Local and extended field trips, community service programs and after-school activities are all essential parts of school life.
The school community is diverse, representing more than 40 countries and many languages. Parents play an essential role at HIS, and their expertise and skills are valued and respected as part of a collaborative approach towards the students' education. Homeroom and classroom teachers are native English speakers, and language teachers are native speakers of the language they teach.
