Founded in 1990, the University of Koblenz-Landau is a mid-sized university which originated as a teacher training college. The university offers study programs in educational science, the humanities, cultural studies, social science, natural science, computer science, environmental science and psychology. Currently, around 13,000 students are matriculated, about half at the Koblenz campus and the other half in Landau. In Metternich, a suburb of Koblenz, study and research take place at a modern campus near the Moselle River, while the main campus in Landau is currently being modernized and expanded. It is the only university in Rhineland-Palatinate to offer teacher training courses for all types of schools.
