Located in the rural surroundings of Bonn-Bad Godesberg, the Independent Bonn International School (IBIS) is a private, primary day school for children from the ages of three to 11 years. Founded in 1963 by a group of parents, it was for many years called the British Embassy Preparatory School (BEPS). Once the embassies moved from Bonn to Berlin, the school changed its name to reflect the increasing diversity of its student body. Children of more than 30 nationalities attend IBIS.
Kindergarten (ages 3-4) begins at 8:50 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m. for half-day students or at 3:00 p.m. for full-day students. The primary school classes also begin at 8:50 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. The mid-day lunch break includes a Hot Lunch Program which costs extra. Extra-curricular activities vary from year to year, based on the children's interests and what the teachers and parent-volunteers decide to offer.
Music lessons are available through private tutors. Students are required to wear uniforms. The school is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities (COBISEC) and is inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). IBIS has also been approved by the German education authorities as an alternative (Ersatzschule), a status achieved in 2001.
